Five years after Katrina animals and their owners are still on their own when a disaster happens. The Red Cross will not shelter pets with their owners. Disaster responders are not trained to handle animals. Officials are not enforcing the PETS Act. It is time to do something about it: join DART!

Lamorinda DART (Disaster Animal Response Team)

Lamorinda DART is a group of experienced animal disaster responders. DART specializes in Animal Care and Sheltering during disasters. Our operational area includes the City of Lafayette, the Town of Moraga and the City of Orinda. Our emergency animal shelters are located near a shelter for people. Other partners are the Contra Costa County Animal Response Team (Contra Costa Animal Services), Noah's Wish, other DARTs in Contra Costa and the American Red Cross. Together, we rescue the whole family.

We are exploring ways to deliver the classroom part of our training online. In the meantime you can watch our presentations by following the links below:

  • Unit 0: Introduction to Animal Services (not online for copyright reasons)

We recommend that you read our training brochure before watching the presentations.

Currently, the in-person training takes 20 hours. Something that is impossible to put online is the drill (8 hours) - a functional exercise of everything learned during the classroom part of the training.

Graduation Requirements:

  1. Be a CERT graduate (submit proof of graduation)
  2. Have FEMA IS 100, 200 and 700 certifications  (submit copies of certification)
  3. Attend the training (as shown in the attendance roster)
  4. Perform successfully in the drill (evaluation by instructor)
  5. Have a valid Tetanus vaccination
  6. Ability to pass a background check

Graduates receive a DART Photo ID which lists all certifications (Qualifications Card) which is valid for one year.

DART Photo IDs are valid throughout the USA. DART graduates with a valid ID will be accepted as trained volunteers by all DART groups and our partners.
